Exercise #616: Volley Competitions in Pairs
OBJECTIVE:
This competitive activity is a good warm-up for intermediate level players, and provides a lot of touches to help beginning players improve their volleying technique.
DESCRIPTION:
Have your players face each other in pairs, 5-10 yards apart. One player starts with the ball in his hands. When the coach says "go", the first player volleys the ball to his partner's hands, who catches it and quickly volleys it back. Each pair counts aloud, and competes to be the first group to complete 50 "clean" volleys (balls that hit the ground before being caught do not count). When a group reaches the objective, the other pairs must do 10 "hops", and then they play again.
VARIANTS:
1. Play the same game, but use half-volleys.
2. Require your players to alternate feet with each volley. For example, if a player used his left foot for the last volley, he must use his right foot for the next one.
3. Require your players to reach 50 consecutive volleys to win (they must start the count over at zero whenever the ball hits the ground).
