Discover the revolutionary new approach to conditioning training using a ball. This set of books provides a comprehensive guide to improve your players' fitness and their technique at the same time.

Total Soccer Conditioning is a two volume comprehensive guide (over 300 pages) to training your players to be fitter, stronger, and more technically adept. From explaining the physiology of soccer to identifying the components of fitness to extensive training exercises, this special book set is exhaustive in its detail on how to get the maximum benefit from every session.

Conditioning is a vital part of training, no question. But too often you have to make the choice between working on fitness or technique. Well, now you don't have to because Total Soccer Conditioning provides you with a comprehensive coaching methodology for integrating physical conditioning with technical and tactical elements.

The two volumes include a wide variety of ball oriented exercises, training guides, and a guide to strength training so you can improve your players' fitness and technical ability in the same session. Whether you coach amateur sides or elite teams, Total Soccer Conditioning will improve your understanding of soccer physiology and enable you to run fitness sessions that are more productive and enjoyable for players with a ball at their feet.

This book was born from the frustrations of its author, strength and conditioning trainer Justin Cresser, and other coaches at not having enough time to train both conditioning and technique. When you only have one or two coaching sessions a week, you have to make tough choices about which to focus on. But in a game as physically demanding as soccer this puts coaches between a rock and a hard place.

To address the problem, Cresser created a methodology on how coaches, at every level, can combine physical exercise with technical training. The result is Total Soccer Conditioning, a two book series aimed at coaches, strength and conditioning trainers, and athletes who want to maximize their practice time and add variety to their conditioning, functional, or technical training sessions.

These books cover every aspect of conditioning, from specific fitness training, to ball oriented warm-ups to fitness activities for goalkeepers. With clear explanations on work-to-rest ratios, sequence exercises, intensity and volume, Total Soccer Conditioning contains everything you need to know on improving the fitness and technical ability of your team in every training session. The books provide you with a complete training system that addresses the time restraints and tough choices coaches otherwise have to make in choosing which to focus on in training sessions.

Total Soccer Conditioning: Volume One

The first volume focuses on the different components of fitness and provides a series of exercises for developing each area of a soccer player's physiology.

  • Chapter 1 - An introduction to the physical components and basic physiological aspects of soccer. This chapter also provides a guide on how to run tests to assess the physical attributes of your players.
  • Chapter 2 - A series of static and dynamic stretching exercises to improve whole body flexibility.
  • Chapter 3 - How you can challenge players to push their balance threshold with exercises that will improve three dimensional balance.
  • Chapter 4 - A series of exercises to increase your players' speed and acceleration. These qualities are vital in all aspects of the game, and in particular for dribbling to beat opponents or to lose markers.
  • Chapter 5 - The book now stays true to its name with a guide to ball oriented exercises that will improve your players' agility, such as their stop-and-go speed, reaction times, and coordination.
  • Chapter 6 - This chapter provides a series of calisthenic exercises for building body strength.
  • Chapter 7 - Cresser explains how plyometric training can develop and enhance your players' explosive power. All the exercises can be modified to include technical training with a ball.
  • Chapter 8 - These drills are performed with a ball to increase aerobic and anaerobic endurance for high intensity sprints and jumps.
  • Chapter 9 - The final chapter of volume 1 shows you how to bring everything together to create an effective training schedule. Cresser provides examples of detailed off-, pre-, and in-season training plans to help guide you in creating one of your own.
Total Soccer Conditioning: Volume Two

The second book explains how to optimize traditional technical and tactical drills to improve conditioning and fitness. Combined with Volume One, it provides a comprehensive source of reference information on soccer conditioning.
  • Chapter 1 - Cresser explains how to adapt technical drills to enhance fitness. This includes detailed diagrams, explanations, and coaching points on a series of conditioning drills with a ball.
  • Chapter 2 - This chapter discusses the physiological benefits of proper warm-ups with a variety of ball oriented warm-ups you can use as part of your match day preparations.
  • Chapter 3 - How the technical and conditioning requirements of your players can vary depending on their position. This chapter also presents exercises specifically designed for certain positions and pattern play activities.
  • Chapter 4 - Coaches often lack specific information on how to train the physical fitness of goalkeepers, which are different from the rest of the team. This chapter focuses on training the goalkeeper, by identifying their physical requirements along with simple but effective exercises for improving them.
Total Soccer Conditioning is aimed at senior youth players through to elite professional teams, but also contains exercises for 7-11 and 12-14 age groups. Whether you have a limited understanding of conditioning or a strong background in fitness training, this unique series is packed with insights and the latest innovative approaches on how to combine fitness with technical training, making it a valuable addition to any coach's library.
