This book will show you how to use exercises and small-sided games to unlock the creative potential of your players. Every coach wants their players to be able to solve problems presented by the game.

Brazilian players are known for their flair and improvisational skills. But nowadays in Brazil, with the overcrowded cities, the vast storehouse of young skillful players who were playing with their own ball in the streets and public soccer fields -- called Varzea -- are almost extinct. The soccer schools and academies are now primarily responsible for the development of Brazilian soccer players. Unfortunately, the method of training inside the schools and academies has not followed their traditional Brazilian roots with conditioned games like street soccer, futsal, and beach soccer that give players the creativity and freedom to solve their own problems. These Brazilian traditions have been replaced by coaching that uses the analytical method which is characterized by systematic repetition of isolated technique and actions with little or no pressure that is also found in the United States and most European countries.

Developing Creativity Through Small-Sided Games is an alternative to the analytical method that is characterized by systematic repetition of actions in game context, integrating the technical development, individual and collectively tactical development, as well as physical development. These activities use the randomness and unpredictability of the game to constantly present challenges in a different way. Coaches like Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger are using this type of training at the highest level of the game with great success.

Incorporating these exercises and games into your training sessions will help your players to recognize and react quickly to problems that routinely occur during a game. This will give your players the ability and confidence to creatively solve these problems during their next league or tournament match.

Author Eduardo Andriatti Paulo has coached professional youth clubs in Brazil including Ituano FC and Inter Club Korea. Paulo has also coached and lectured on the Brazilian Methodology in Guatemala, Canada, Bermuda, and many other countries. He is currently the Educational Director of Futebol Brazil System Academy.
